Coconut oil is one of the few oils that actually penetrates the hair shaft. A practical routine for dry, frizzy or thinning hair – and what not to expect.
Coconut oil’s main fatty acid, lauric acid, has a small molecular size and a straight structure that lets it penetrate the hair shaft rather than just coat it. Studies have shown it reduces protein loss from hair when used before washing. That is the science behind a habit Tamil families have followed for centuries.
Regular oiling reduces breakage, adds shine and keeps the scalp comfortable. It will not change your hair’s genetics or regrow hair on bald patches. If you have dandruff caused by fungus, oil alone may make it worse – see a dermatologist.
Refined coconut oil is bleached and deodorised, and many “hair oils” are mineral oil with coconut perfume. Chekku coconut oil is just pressed copra – it smells of coconut because it is coconut. Use it for hair, skin and cooking from the same bottle.
In cool weather the oil will solidify. Scoop a little out and it melts on contact with your palms.
